Reading Intervention in Evergreen, Colorado
If your child is struggling to read at grade level, reading intervention can make a real difference. I provide individualized, evidence-based reading support for K-8 students in Evergreen, Conifer, Bailey, Morrison, and the Denver foothills.
What Is Reading Intervention?
Reading intervention is targeted, one-on-one instruction designed to help students who are reading below grade level catch up to their peers. Unlike classroom instruction, which moves at a pace set for the whole group, reading intervention meets your child exactly where they are and builds skills systematically from there.
I use the Orton-Gillingham approach, an evidence-based method recognized by the International Dyslexia Association. It is structured, sequential, and multi-sensory, meaning students learn through seeing, hearing, and touching. This approach has been proven effective for students who struggle with decoding, fluency, comprehension, and spelling.
Reading intervention is not remedial work or “extra homework.” It is skilled instruction that targets the specific gaps in your child’s reading development and fills them in a way that builds confidence along with ability.
Signs Your Child May Need Reading Intervention
- Reading significantly below grade level
- Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words
- Avoiding reading or becoming frustrated during reading time
- Trouble with reading comprehension even when they can decode words
- Reversing letters or confusing similar-looking words
- Slow, labored reading that takes much more effort than expected
- Struggling with spelling despite repeated practice
- Falling behind in other subjects because reading is a barrier
How I Approach Reading Intervention
Assessment First
Every student begins with an assessment. I evaluate their current reading level, identify specific skill gaps, and understand their learning style. This is not a standardized test score. It is a practical understanding of what your child can and cannot do right now.
Individualized Lesson Plans
Based on the assessment, I build a plan tailored to your child. Lessons follow the Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence, but the pacing and emphasis are customized. Some students need to spend more time on phonemic awareness. Others need fluency practice. The plan adapts as your child progresses.
Consistent One-on-One Sessions
Reading intervention works best with consistency. I typically recommend weekly sessions, though some students benefit from meeting twice a week during intensive catch-up periods. Each session builds on the last, reinforcing skills until they become automatic.
Parent Partnership
I keep parents informed about progress and provide practical strategies for supporting reading at home. I also work with families to strengthen school connections, helping parents communicate with teachers about their child’s needs and ensure consistent support across settings.
Who I Work With
I work with students in grades K through 8, including:
- Students diagnosed with dyslexia or other language-based learning challenges
- Students who are reading below grade level but do not have a formal diagnosis
- Students who have fallen behind due to inconsistent instruction or school changes
- Homeschool students who need structured literacy support
- Students who can decode but struggle with reading comprehension
